Guten Tag. This evening, meet your HGV host, tour director and travel companions for a welcome dinner at your hotel.
In the morning, take in the highlights of Munich, seeing the Old and New Town Halls and the historic town square, Marienplatz, which dates back to 1158. Drive to Prague this afternoon before setting out for an evening of illumination and dinner at a local tavern with music and Czech beer. Explore Prague at night, seeing its illuminated icons like Prague Castle and taking a stroll across the world-famous Charles Bridge.
Often referred to as the “City of a Hundred Spires,” or the “Golden City,” in the morning, you’ll stroll past Baroque buildings, Gothic churches, the Astronomical Clock and the castle complex of Hradčany Castle (Prague Castle). In the afternoon, enjoy panoramic views of the city on board a cruise along the Vltava River. Discover Prague from a different perspective and take in the sights as you enjoy your lunch on board. This evening, you are free to explore on your own.
Journey towards Budapest with a stopover in Bratislava. As the low mountain range of the Carpathian Mountains rises in the north and the castle perches above the Danube, you’ll explore this picturesque city with an orientation walk and free time to explore. Look out for “Čumil,” or the Man at Work, one of Bratislava’s most famous inhabitants — a bronze statue of a man climbing out of a manhole. Then, arrive at your Budapest accommodation, take a moment to unwind before an enchanting and illuminating evening featuring “Paris of the East” sites.
Explore the “Pearl of the Danube” on a morning guided walk of Budapest, stopping at the picturesque Matthias Coronation Church, which continues to host royal weddings and coronation ceremonies with its beautiful Neo-Gothic architecture as the backdrop. You’ll also visit Fisherman’s Bastion, famous for its turrets and terraces and one of the most well-known attractions in the Buda Castle area. Following a free afternoon, come hungry for a traditional Hungarian dinner.
As you arrive in Austria, you’ll drive along the famous Ringstrasse before checking into your Vienna accommodations. Visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the symbol of Vienna and marvel at the magnificent cathedral known for its intricately tiled roof, 500-foot-tall South Tower and its “Giant’s Door” – adorned with dragons, birds, lions, monks and demons. Enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at your leisure and explore the bustling main city square of Stephansplatz. Tonight, venture outside the city center for a traditional Austrian dinner complete with music, entertainment and wine.
Today, explore Vienna with a Pick Your Experience opportunity. Options will be available closer to travel and may range from classical works of Mozart to visiting historic sites.
During the journey to Salzburg, you’ll make a stop in Krems, a small town surrounded by terraced vineyards, for a leisurely cruise on the Danube River. Enjoy traditional coffee and cake (Kaffee und Kuchen) tastings as you admire one of the most scenic sections of the Danube River. Stretch your legs with an afternoon walking tour of the charming and preserved old town of Salzburg. Take in the preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mirabell Gardens and marvel at the baroque fountain and medieval buildings of Residenzplatz. Savor Austrian dishes and creative drinks as you enjoy an evening of exquisite dining at St. Peter Stiftskeller restaurant.
This morning, depart for Munich and stop in Berchtesgaden. Visit the infamous WWII historic site, “Eagle’s Nest” command post. Perched on a mountainside, this scenic chalet offers panoramic views of the mountainous landscape. Experience what made the Bavarian Alps legendary and the overshadowing history of how it became Hitler’s retreat, once used for official and social gatherings of the Nazi Party. Tonight, say farewell to your fellow travelers at the famous Hofbräuhaus München with an authentic Bavarian dinner and beer. Prost.
Your vacation ends with breakfast as you prepare to say farewell and journey homeward. Tschüs.
