This morning, get your first glimpse of Rome’s iconic places with a walking tour. Then, in the evening meet your HGV Host, tour director and fellow travelers for a welcome dinner — deliziosa.
Marvel at the artistic and architectural treasures of Vatican City on a guided tour of the city-state which serves as the heart of the Roman Catholic world. Visit the Vatican Museums and see the Sistine Chapel, site of the papal conclave and famously frescoed by Italian Renaissance masters such as Botticelli and Perugino, with its famous ceiling painted by Michelangelo. View the famous dome of St. Peter’s Basilica from St. Peter’s Square and then head to the Colosseum. As you stand in the world’s largest amphitheater, you will be able to imagine the roar of ancient Roman crowds as gladiators and exotic beasts clashed on the sands below. Enjoy free time in the afternoon to explore on your own.
Today, say arrivederci to the City of Seven Hills and head to the Renaissance capital of the world, birthplace of such historical notables as Michelangelo, Dante, Machiavelli and the resting place of Galileo. Visit the Florence Academy of Fine Arts to gaze up at the towering figure of Michelangelo’s David sculpture. See Il Duomo, the sprawling cathedral complex that dominates the city skyline and includes artistic wonders such as Giotto’s bell tower and the gilded bronze Gates of Paradise. Stand in the Piazza della Signoria on the doorstep of Palazzo Vecchio, the town hall of Florence and a building rich in both art and history. This evening, escape the bustling energy of the city for an authentic, locally sourced dinner in the peaceful Tuscan countryside.
Take to the canal waters of The Floating City as you explore the islands and waterways of Venice, first by private boat ride and then on a walking tour of city highlights, including St. Mark’s Square and the Bridge of Sighs. Attend a glass blowing demonstration in the city famous for its colorful blown glass treasures and maybe pick up a souvenir or two. Slip into a gondola for a magical ride through the world of the Venetian canals, before indulging in a dinner featuring local fare. Today, cross into Switzerland and the majesty of the Alps. Visit the town of Bellinzona, riding the elevator to the courtyard of Castelgrande, the largest of the three castles that comprise the Fortress of Bellinzona. From this UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the Middle Ages, you can take in panoramic views of Bellinzona. Enjoy a light lunch featuring local cuisine and the merlot wine for which the region of Ticino is famous. Then, take in the views on your scenic drive through the Swiss Alps and the St. Gotthard Pass en route to Lucerne. This evening, a three-course dinner of local Swiss specialties awaits. Spend your day in charming Lucerne, nestled in the Swiss Alps and situated on the sparkling waters of Lake Lucerne and the River Reuss. As you amble among the medieval architecture, you will see the Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument. Take a relaxing and picturesque sightseeing cruise on glistening Lake Lucerne. From the water to the skies, ascend Mount Pilatus for panoramic views of the city and mountains.

Tour itinerary activities in this region may be subject to favorable weather conditions. The Vatican Museums are wheelchair accessible, but the entrance and route differ from those of the included guided visit.
