Welcome to the Last Frontier. Upon arrival at your Fairbanks hotel, you will meet your HGV Host and Adventure Specialist. The rest of the day is yours to explore the Golden Heart City at your leisure.
Begin your Alaska adventure with a day of exploration in the largest city of the state’s interior, known for its midnight sun and gold rush history. See the city highlights and then visit the University of Alaska Museum of the North to learn about all things Alaska, from the diverse wildlife to the rich culture, art and history of Alaska Natives. Meet Blue Babe, a mummified bison and learn about arctic dinosaurs. After free time for lunch, rest your legs on a relaxing, old-fashioned sternwheeler cruise on the Chena River. The evening is at your leisure. Consider indulging in the succulent and healthy goodness of fresh Alaska salmon at a salmon bake and a musical comedy show, The Golden Heart Revue.
All aboard the Wilderness Express for your rail journey to Denali! From your glass-domed railcar, you won’t miss a moment of the stunning scenery as you travel to Alaska’s most iconic national park. Founded in 1917, Denali National Park and Preserve is defined by its tundra ecosystem and geography, glaciers and of course, the snowy peaks of Mount McKinley. This afternoon, explore the park at your leisure. Will you take a guided hike of Denali, soar on a flightseeing trip or raft down the Nenana River? The choice is yours! This evening, join your HGV host and fellow travelers for a welcome dinner.
On your second day in Denali, embark on the Tundra Wilderness Tour along the park’s only road for incredible scenery and wildlife-viewing opportunities. Keep your eyes open for Alaska’s “Big Five” wildlife residents: bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep and gray wolves. The rest of the day is open for perusing the exhibits at the visitor’s center. Or, if you’d rather stretch your legs, hit one of the hiking or biking trails that begin near the park entrance.
Take a morning walk on the trails around the lodge before reboarding the Wilderness Express to continue on to Talkeetna. Enjoy a free evening in this quirky mountain town with a view of Mount McKinley and the Alaska Range. Wander the streets of the historic downtown area, exploring the quaint shops and stop for dinner at one of the local restaurants or brewpubs.
This morning in outdoorsy Talkeetna, explore natural Alaska by river, air, glacier or trail with free time. Then relax back aboard the Wilderness Express on the scenic route to Anchorage. Tonight, step into the nightlife of Alaska’s largest city. Make the most of the late nights granted by the midnight sun, exploring the restaurants, craft breweries and urban trails.
Visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center, where you will learn about the diverse traditions of Alaska Natives. Enjoy free time for lunch and then climb aboard for one more railway day as you travel to your port in Seward, winding along the waters of Turnagain Arm and the Chugach Mountains. Your cruise departs this evening from Seward.
As you sail, find yourself dwarfed by the icy battlements of Hubbard Glacier (sightseeing from 2 p.m.–5 p.m.), the largest tidewater glacier in North America. Listen for “White Thunder” — the crashing of ice falling into the bay — and keep your eyes peeled and camera ready for the more than 200 species of birds that call this area home.
Spend a day at the port in Juneau (9 a.m.–10 p.m.), the capital of Alaska, which sits nestled between the slopes of Mount Juneau and the waters of Gastineau Channel. Pick Your Experience in the city known for its icy natural wonders, whale watching and historic downtown area.
Today, your ship docks in historic Skagway (7 a.m.–8 p.m.). The day is yours to Pick Your Experience or simply explore on your own in this former gold rush port, home to the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park, a scenic railway and bountiful gardens.
Welcome to the tiny port of Icy Strait Point (7:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.), owned and operated by the Huna Tlingit Native Alaskans. Authentic Alaskan culture abounds, from Native tribal dances to delicious meals featuring local seafood and game, such as reindeer and caribou. Explore with a Pick Your Experience opportunity, from whale watching to attending a performance by the Huna Tlingit Dancers. If you’re feeling more adventurous, take a guided rainforest hike or dare the heights of ZipRider®, the world’s longest zip line.
Relax and recover from your adventures as you spend a day on the high seas. Take the time to decompress or take advantage of the numerous shipboard activities and amenities. Still feeling adventurous? Try onboard surfing, skydiving simulators, rise to new heights in the North Star observation deck, or relax at the spa or in one of the pools.
Enjoy another relaxing day at sea. Take the time to decompress or take advantage of the numerous shipboard activities and amenities. In the evening, join your HGV Host and fellow travelers for a farewell cocktail party.
Your airport transfer is included as you say farewell to your group and travel home.
