7-Day Land Tour Roundtrip From Manchester
Trip Dates: June 6–12, 2026 | October 2–8, 2026
Prepare to wander, dreaming as you go, on this week-long trip to the Lake District. As you explore the dramatic green hills and lovely lakes that characterize Lakeland, you’ll understand why the region became a favorite retreat for Romantic poets and Victorian writers. Find your own inspiration as you cruise the waters of Windermere, experience high tea at a country manor turned luxury hotel and visit quiet lakeside towns. Be transported to an even earlier era, the days of Roman Britain, with a visit to Hadrian’s Wall and the archaeological site of Vindolanda. When you are finished contemplating the past, turn your attention to a more modern lyrical style with a day trip to Liverpool and a celebration of all things Beatles. Your home base will be the HGV’s Pine Lake Resort in Carnforth, where you will stay in lakeside comfort. The resort offers modern accommodations blended with lodge-like coziness to complete your experience.

Welcome to the Lake District! Arrive at Pine Lake Resort, where you will meet your HGV host and fellow travelers. The day is yours to spend at leisure, enjoying the resort’s amenities and, of course, the picturesque shores of Pine Lake. A grocery shuttle will be provided, so you can stock up on supplies for your stay. This evening, get to know your fellow HGV Members during a welcome dinner at the resort restaurant.
On your first jaunt from home base today, explore the ancient legacy of the Roman Empire in Britain. Visit the remains of the once-imposing Hadrian’s Wall, a 73-mile fortification begun in A.D. 122 to protect Roman Britain from the Scots to the north. Though much of the stone has been stripped for building over the centuries, the wall still winds in serpentine fashion through the hills of northern England. Some of these repurposed stones can still be seen in the walls of Lanercost Priory. Follow Hadrian’s Wall to the archaeological dig at the Roman fort of Vindolanda. Enjoy a sumptuous high tea at Armathwaite Hall, an old country estate turned luxury hotel.
The day begins with a scenic drive to Rydal, where a short and picturesque walk leads you to the atmospheric Rydal Caves. Nestled into the hillside above Rydal Water, these man-made caves offer a peaceful retreat and make for a perfect photo stop.
Continue to the charming village of Grasmere. Enjoy time to explore its literary connections, including a visit to St. Oswald’s Church to see William Wordsworth’s grave. Don’t miss the chance to sample the world-famous Grasmere Gingerbread — a sweet treat still made from a secret 1854 recipe.
Next, head to Keswick to visit the Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of Britain’s most dramatically located prehistoric sites, offering panoramic views of the surrounding fells and a sense of ancient mystery. Take in the scenery at Ullswater, often hailed as England’s most beautiful lake. As you head back towards the resort, follow the rugged Kirkstone Pass, the highest paved road in the Lake District. From the summit, you’ll enjoy sweeping vistas over Windermere and beyond.
This evening, we’ll gather in the on-site restaurant to enjoy some complimentary cocktails, a perfect opportunity to toast the day’s adventures.
Spend today exploring the Lakes region that Beatrix Potter, author of “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” and numerous other children’s stories, called home. Visit Holker Hall for a tour and an opportunity to stroll through the English country gardens. Then, it’s all aboard at Haverthwaite Station. Board a scenic steam train and chug along the route from Haverthwaite to Lakeside Pier, where you will embark on a relaxing cruise of Windermere. Come to port in Bowness-on-Windermere and enjoy free time in this lakeside town on the shores of England’s largest lake. Those who love literature will enjoy the immersive World of Beatrix Potter. Your local guide can suggest an array of options.
Journey to the vibrant city of Liverpool, a place synonymous with music, maritime history and the legendary Beatles. Begin your day at the historic Royal Albert Dock, where the revitalized waterfront sets the stage for your journey through Liverpool’s rich cultural heritage. Take in the scenic views before boarding a relaxing River Mersey cruise, offering panoramic vistas of the city’s iconic skyline from the water. Back on dry land, stop for a photo with the Beatles Statue on the waterfront before walking over to the British Music Experience in the Cunard Building. This immersive museum brings decades of British music history to life, from the Beatles and Bowie to Adele and beyond.
After lunch, continue to the legendary Cavern Club on Mathew Street. Soak up the atmosphere of this iconic venue where the Beatles played nearly 300 times. Enjoy an afternoon drink and some live music as a fitting end to your Beatles-inspired day in the heart of Liverpool. After a wonderful day, we’ll head back to the resort to enjoy the evening at leisure.
Venture from the Lakes today to explore the Yorkshire Dales, traveling through Swaledale, Wensleydale and Dentdale and stop at the roaring waters of Aysgarth Falls, featured in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” Step into the 14th century at Bolton Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned. Bask in the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and stop at the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes, where you will have the opportunity to purchase the delicious, crumbly cheese native to the region. Return to the resort for a farewell dinner with your fellow Members.
Your transfer back to Manchester Airport is included as you bid the Lakes farewell and return home.
