Welcome to London! Arrive at the London hotel for your overnight stay. The day is yours to spend at leisure, recovering from your travels. Tonight, enjoy a welcome dinner, where you will meet your HGV host and fellow travelers.
Today, you will journey across the south of England to Devon to explore author Jane Austen’s home, now a museum in Chawton, and Hestercombe House and Gardens. We will stop for lunch at a nearby restaurant.
Upon arrival at the resort, a grocery shuttle will be provided so you can stock up on supplies for your stay.
Your day begins with a scenic drive through the open moors and along the coastal cliffs that characterize Exmoor National Park. Next, visit the twin Victorian holiday towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, connected by the still-operational funicular railway built in 1890. Ride the railway* and enjoy free time to explore these quaint villages, shop and grab lunch. Don’t forget to save room for the indulgence of a Devonshire cream tea: fresh scones, clotted cream and jam. Then, visit Arlington Court, home of the Chichester family. See the stately manor house and visit the Carriage Museum, housed in the stables, which features over 40 vehicles from bygone days before the advent of engines. Return to the resort later this afternoon and spend the rest of the day at leisure.
*Please note, there are a number of steps to negotiate on/off the funicular railway.
All aboard. Your morning begins in Paignton, where you will board the historic Dartmouth Steam Railway to Kingswear. From there, hop a ferry to the seaside resort town of Dartmouth. A river cruise will carry you up the River Dart in leisurely fashion to Greenway House, the summer home of beloved mystery writer Agatha Christie. Explore this stately riverfront house on a self-guided tour of the place where the famous author lived and wrote several novels, including “Ordeal by Innocence” and Hercule Poirot mysteries “Five Little Pigs” and “Dead Man’s Folly.” Return to Dartmouth by ferry, where your coach will collect you and return you to the resort for an evening at leisure.
Today, you will explore the neighboring county of Cornwall. Forming the tip of the peninsula, this county, known for its coastal beauty, is also known in legend as the birthplace of King Arthur. Visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan. The gardens of this former estate of the Tremayne family were lost to time when their caretakers were called to fight in World War I. Until 30 years ago, the gardens remained hidden under a tangle of weeds and brambles, when the discovery of a door in the ruins revealed this truly secret garden. Tour the restored grounds and enjoy a light lunch in the garden’s café. Then, take a short drive to picturesque Mevagissey, the second-largest fishing port in Cornwall, populated since at least the sixth century.
Make your way back towards London, stopping in the ancient Roman town of Bath, a spa town characterized by its distinctive Georgian architecture. Take a guided panoramic tour of the city and then explore the Roman Baths for which the town is named. Enjoy free time to explore at leisure, strolling along the River Avon, visiting Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein or taking afternoon tea at the Georgian Pump Room, where luminaries such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens once dined.
On the route back to London, you will have the opportunity to Pick Your Experience with the following options:
Option 1: For the history lover, this option carries you to Salisbury Plain for an encounter with the imposing and mysterious Stonehenge. Marvel at the megaliths of the world’s most famous standing stones. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has watched the solstices come and go since around 3,100 B.C. See if you can divine the mystery of the stones, which have intrigued mystics and historians for millennia. Then, continue to the outskirts of London for a visit to Hampton Court Palace, a favorite residence of Henry VIII and his six wives.
Option 2: Spend a day at Downton Abbey with a visit to the filming location Highclere Castle. Walk the same halls as Lady Mary, sit in Jackdaws Castle like Lady Edith or visit the dining room to relive some of Dame Maggie Smith’s iconic moments as the Dowager Countess. Then, explore the sparkling Crystal Grotto in Painshill. The 18th-century garden landscape of Painshill will be familiar to fans of “Bridgerton” and the 2009 film “Dorian Gray.”
Once you arrive in London for your overnight stay, enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow Members.
Your transfer to London Heathrow Airport is included as you say farewell to England and return home, or on to the next journey.
