Welcome to Germany! After checking into your hotel, the day is yours to spend at leisure. Tonight, enjoy a welcome dinner, where you will meet your HGV host and fellow travelers.
The hills of the fairytale city of Salzburg are alive with the sound of music. On your way to your resort, stop in this birthplace of Mozart, familiar to many as the primary filming location of the classic film, “The Sound of Music.” On your guided tour, you will visit filming locations and learn the history of the city where the real Trapp family once lived. You will also visit Hohensalzburg Fortress, which towers high over the city and enjoy a group lunch. Enjoy free time for shopping and exploring in Salzburg’s Old Town. Visit Mozart’s Birthplace museum to learn more about the world-famous composer. Your journey continues to Schladming, where Alpine Club awaits. Upon arrival at the resort, the evening is yours to spend at leisure; unwind from your journey as you enjoy the resort’s indoor pool and sauna. A grocery shuttle will be provided, so you can stock up on supplies for your stay.
Take to the heights today on a scenic drive along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the highest paved mountain pass in Austria. The road’s 36 turns wind up and down the mountainside and past roaring waterfalls as you make your way to High Tauern National Park, known for its pristine high-mountain landscapes. After lunch at your leisure, return to the valley and enjoy free time at the lakeside of Zell am See, enjoying the lakefront promenade or shopping for souvenirs in this picturesque town.
The day begins in lovely Hallstatt, perched on the shores of the lake of the same name. On a guided tour, visit the Beinhaus, the ossuary of St. Michael’s Chapel. This unique crypt is the resting place of skulls and bones from the last eight centuries, with many of them beautifully painted. Enjoy a delicious lunch surrounded by old-world magnificence at Zauner Grand Café before you drive to the spa town Bad Ischl, where you will tour the Kaiservilla, summer home of Hapsburg Emperor Franz Joseph I.
Today, cross the border into Germany for a day in Bavaria.
We start with a visit to the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines, where you’ll take a guided tour through the underground tunnels. Put on your miner’s outfit and slide down wooden chutes, ride a little train and even cross an underground salt lake. It’s a fun and fascinating look at how salt was mined here for hundreds of years.
Stop for lunch at Bergschänke, a cozy mountain restaurant right next to the mines. Then travel to the Eagle’s Nest, Adolf Hitler’s mountain retreat perched atop the Kehlstein. Explore the history of this unique building and take in the spectacular Alpine views from 6,017 feet up.
Today, enjoy a scenic drive around the Salzkammergut, the Austrian Lake District. Your drive will wind you past Ebensee before a leisurely cruise on Traunsee. Spend free time in lakeside Gmunden, historically one of Europe’s largest ceramics producers. Enjoy a traditional Austrian lunch in a historic tavern, served by waiters in traditional dress. On your way back to the resort, stop at a gingerbread factory that has been in operation since the 1580s. Austrian gingerbread — lebkuchen — is softer and more mildly spiced than English gingerbread. Make sure to grab some tasty treats before you return to the resort for an evening at leisure.
Today’s journey takes you high into the Dachstein mountains that surround the valley and town of Schladming. First, drive through the peaceful countryside of Ramsau before ascending Hoher Dachstein, first by coach and then by panoramic cable car. From the top, enjoy breathtaking views of the Dachstein Mountains and the glacier below. If you’re feeling adventurous, brave the Dachstein Suspension Bridge and Stairway to Nothingness. Across the suspension bridge lies the frozen wonder of the Ice Palace. These features may not be suited to those afraid of heights. Return to the resort for free time before your farewell dinner at a traditional Austrian alpine tavern in Rohrmoos, where you will be treated to an alpine feast.
Your transfer to Munich Airport is included as you say farewell to Austria and return home or begin your next journey. Auf Wiedersehen.
